Qi Gong Head Massage

Prepare the hands to work their magic. Bring your shoulder blades gently together and down without arching your back. Rotate the arms slowly in large arm circles in sync with your breath. Breathe with your whole abdomen. Ten slow breaths with the arms rotating forward, then ten slow breaths with the arms rotating backwards.

Use your middle finger in small depressions, and all four fingers when moving over larger areas. Always use small circular motions with an even rhythm, where pressure rises and falls in a steady oscillation.

Bring your fingers to the mastoid process and work into the depression with your small circles. Move up over the ear to the temples and the outer corner of the eye and just in front of the ear. Zig zag back to the mastoid process slightly higher till you have made three passes. This covers the Gall Bladder meridian (Tiger), which is especially useful in relaxation, both mentally and in the muscles of the neck.

Next move your fingertip to the inner corner of the eye and very gently press. Move up to the middle of the eyebrow, and then straight back over the head to the nape of the neck. This is the Urinary Bladder meridian (Deer), and is especially useful for releasing tension in the back as well as augment mental clarity. Sink the fingertips into the nape and provide gentle traction.

Move back to the mastoid process and work back up the GB meridian once more, this time dropping down to work along the bottom of the zygomatic arch. Stop at the nose crease and press firmly into the depression. This is the final point of the Large Intestine meridian (Crane), and relieves sinus pressure/inflammation. It can also have a positive impact on grief.

Move down to the corners of the mouth, then to the top of the jaw bone. Drop your thumbs into the bottom, interior aspect of the jaw, and work back towards the masseter muscle with your fingers on the upper/exterior aspect of the jaw and you thumbs on the lower/interior aspect. Pause to work the masseter and the internal angle of the mandible. This is the Stomach meridian (Bear) and it is good for calming hyperactivity and jaw/tmj pain.

Swing your fingers around to work down the SCM muscle. This will activate the Small Intestine meridian (Monkey) in the posterior, and the Large Intestine Meridian (Crane) in the anterior. This will Calm the Spirit, which can be understood as easing worries and anxiety. Grasp and pull the trapezius muscle at its apex, allowing the fingers and thumb to fall into the depressions found there. This is the Gall Bladder meridian (Tiger) again, and further reduces stress and promotes relaxation.
