Calisthenics are not jumping jacks! Far from what you remember from gym class, calisthenics are incredibly powerful tools to strengthen the body and bring it back into balance. Their name is from the ancient Greek for strength and beauty. They are compound, body weight exercises, which means they incorporate multiple joints and muscle groups in each movement and require no special equipment. Prime examples are pull ups and air squats. Moving your body in a compound movement is far safer than using weights that target a specific muscle. Medicinal Martial Arts uses leveraged calisthenics, which means that you start off doing pull ups standing up holding onto a doorframe or column, rather than hoist yourself off the ground on your first day. In this way we strengthen and wake up the muscles that have gone to sleep or have become too weak to allow proper posture and movement.
